The portion of Irondequoit Creek that runs through Philbrick Park (formerly Linear Park) was known to the Iroquois as Sgoh-sa-is-thah or “smashing water against rock,” probably referring to the thumping sound this turbulent water makes as it bashes up against slabs of limestone bedrock. What’s interesting about this site is that the rapids that flow through this area were used my several mills (none of which exist today). In many spots you’ll find foundations of old mills, tormented by the water on one end and attacked by woodland on the other. Today this is a reminder of Penfield’s mill-based economy of old, not to mention an excellent fishing spot.
